"Gate" is a Scots term for "street".

The Cowgate, for instance, is a street in Edinburgh, Scotland, situated about five minutes' stroll from Edinburgh Castle, within the town's World history website. The road's name is based on the fact cows had been herded down it for Edinburgh's market days in earlier hundreds of years.
